Learning to Love Again After Loss

Dear Jack,
I have another dog now. I can’t help it but I still cry because I miss my girl. God forgive me, but I want her here with me instead of my new boy. I get upset with him because he isn’t her. I have never been this ungrateful and I don’t understand it. He was abused and I am very careful to be sure I am kind to him. I know my girl would want me to take care of him the way I took care of her.  But I miss her. I love her. I want her back.  We had everything, she and me, and now I feel so alone without her.

It can be a rollercoaster ride. You make the mistake of comparing, when deep inside you know the new one will never take the place of the previous one. It's supposed to be this way.

Relationships are assignments and when they end you are forced to graduate and move on to learn new lessons. But it's hard. It's all part of the learning -- to love again anew. Without judgment. Without comparison. It will be easier when you have further healed from your grief. In the meantime you keep pushing through to the love and one day you'll find you truly love again -- but never ever the same way you did before.

Hang in there. Take good care of the one who has come into your life. Tears are okay as long as you are moving forward.
Love, Jack
