Dear Jack,
I am 64 and don't want to risk getting another dog in case it would outlive me, plus am definitely not ready anyway. Thanks. Any feedback/ thoughts appreciated.
Please don't let your age hold you back from loving and adopting again when and if you are ready. You are still young in the scheme of things -- for all you know, you could live to be 100 and have time for three or four more pets! Why deny yourself the love you would experience because of your fears?
Here are my recommendations:
(1) Have your plan in place (we all should, no matter what age we are) to have someone ready to care for the one you leave behind if you have to leave first;
(2) Pick an appropriate breed with a reasonable activity level to match your own. Get an older dog if it seems a good match or maybe it’s time to try a cat if you’ve always had dogs.
Life is simply too short --and sometimes too long-- not to take another chance on love.
Love, Jack
The most important thing you can do is relax and do not force anything. When you are forcing something that doesn't feel right, then it isn’t right.
It can be a rollercoaster ride if you allow it. You fight with yourselves. "Should I get another pet? ...When should I get one? ...What kind should it be? ...Should I buy one or rescue one? ...Is it too soon? ...Maybe I can find my old pet, reincarnated! ...Maybe I shouldn't get another pet at all, I am so tired and weary and sad with grief..."
It's never "too soon" or "too late" if there is a new friend you resonate with. Try not to judge yourself. Your best friend is not judging you. Your best friend just wants you to be happy again. You simply need to be in the right place at the right time to get the one that is right for you. The day may come and you will feel an unexpected desire to act. While certain things are out of your control, there is a certain responsibility you have, to act on your urges and wants, which are there to propel you towards your heart's desire.
We love and support you in whatever your decision may be. Hang in there.
Love, Jack
