This little guy is a fighter! Bow or bowsie as we call him is another one of our senior rescues. Bow was approximately 11 years old when he was surrendered to the humane society. When they evaluated him, it turned out that he had cancer. The tumor was about the size of a golf ball, which seems small, but to a dog that weighs roughly 6 pounds, a tumor that size is pretty big and very uncomfortable. His teeth were almost completely rotten and he need some medical help quickly. Due to his age and physical condition, he was very unlikely to he adopted.
As soon as we read his story, we knew that we had to go save him. We told the humane society that we would adopt him, and they said they would attempt the surgery, but there was a likely chance he wouldn't survive... well they removed the tumor and also several of his decaying teeth. He made it through the surgery just fine, they informed us that chances are that this will likely be a hospice case and that his life expectancy was pretty grim. It didn't matter to us, no animal deserves to die alone in a cage. We took him home, and we cared for him like we have known him our entire life. He started off so quiet and calm. Hardly ever made a sound... few months later and he was completely healed and started to be a little more active. Roughly 2 years later he is alive and well. He is no longer quiet and calm, he's loud and very spunky at times.
He barks non stop at any little noise and even starts fights with his 100lb pitbull brother and his other 104 lb German sheperd. He has no fear, no filter and no regard for his own safety. He will fight anything and anyone, even though he has hardly any teeth, he still manages to catch stripes gophers and mice. He has now earned the nickname 'barkbark bowsy!' He our little ball of fire and he is spending his remaining time on our farm to roam free outside, sleep in our bed at night and gets his 10 treats a day... next time you go to a shelter ask for their long term resident, the special needs and the senior pets. They won't be around for long, but the time you spend with them feels like a lifetime.
