Your Pet Doesn't Need Fixing. They Need You to Be Still.
Interview with Kathleen Prasad & Nita Daryanani
If you've ever reached out to comfort a frightened animal and watched them back away, this conversation is for you.
Nita sits down with Kathleen Prasad, who has been sharing Reiki with animals since 1998 and created the Let Animals Lead® method. Together they explore what Reiki really is, why the gentlest approach is often the most powerful, and how simply being calm and present can help your animal rest, trust and heal.
Kathleen also guides a short Let Animals Lead meditation you can do at home with your own animals, so stay until the end.

Kathleen Prasad is widely known as a pioneer of Animal Reiki. She began sharing Reiki with animals in 1998, when almost no one was doing it, and through years of work in shelters, sanctuaries and homes she developed the Let Animals Lead® method: a meditative practice of calm, healing presence in which animals are free to choose whether and how they connect.
Kathleen's love of animals began early. Growing up in Napa, California, she spent childhood summers in the Sierra mountains, sitting still on a fallen log until chipmunks, birds and deer felt safe enough to come close. That early lesson became the heart of her life's work: animals come to us when we are still and they feel safe.
A former inner-city teacher in San Francisco, Kathleen first found Reiki as a way through her own lifelong anxiety. When her dog began lying on her feet during her daily self-practice, she realized animals feel and seek out this peaceful energy. She brought it to her local shelter, and her life's work began.
Through Animal Reiki Source, Kathleen has taught thousands of students around the world. She is President and Co-Founder of SARA, author of the Animal Reiki Practitioner Code of Ethics, and has taught at organizations including Best Friends Animal Society and the San Francisco SPCA. She lives in Northern California with her family, her dog Vinny and her horse Kodiak.
Today her work is recognized far beyond the Animal Reiki community. Her Let Animals Lead® training holds dual accreditation from the CPD Standards Office, including Trainer of Excellence status. The Canadian Reiki Association has endorsed it as the gold standard in Animal Reiki education, and Kathleen helped the association create its Animal Reiki designation. With more than 10,000 hours of animal Reiki practice, she has been featured in Psychology Today, the American Kennel Club and PBS's Healing Quest.
Kathleen is also the author of more than a dozen books, including Reiki for Dogs, Everything Animal Reiki and Heart to Heart with Horses, and she hosts the monthly Animal Reiki Talk podcast. At the center of everything she teaches is one simple belief: animals don't need us to fix them. They need a space where they feel safe enough to truly relax, so they can heal themselves.
A Note From Nita
"I live with five dogs in Hong Kong. Two of them, Bodhi and Moksha, came to me from the hills as frightened little brothers, and for years I thought loving them meant reaching out to stroke them. Kathleen showed me that the kindest thing I can do is sit quietly and let them choose. When she guided us through her meditation, it wasn't only for my animals. It was also for me. If you share your home with an animal who keeps their distance, please watch this conversation."

What Makes the Let Animals Lead® Method Different
Traditional Reiki was designed for people lying on a table. Kathleen found that many animals, especially frightened, traumatized or wild ones, did not want to be touched, or even to have healing "beamed" at them. So she turned the practice inward.
-
01
The animal decides.
Your animal chooses whether to join in, how close to come and when to leave. As Kathleen says, "I don't decide, they decide."
-
02
Nothing is forced.
No hands required and no sending energy at them. You simply hold a calm space, like a bubble your animal can step into.
-
03
See the whole animal, not the problem.
Instead of focusing on what's wrong, you rest in the feeling that all is well and see your animal's light.
-
04
You heal too.
As Kathleen puts it, "Although we are really focused on helping our animals, we end up learning how to be a better human being."
How often do we give our animals choices?

Closing thoughts
At the Heart of This Conversation
At the heart of this conversation is a simple, surprising idea: sometimes the most healing thing we can offer an animal is not our hands, our fixes or our worry, but our calm.
Kathleen reminds us that animals feel our energy long before we reach for them. When we slow down, let go of the story of what's wrong and trust them to choose, we give them something rare: the freedom to come to us in their own way.
Whether your animal is a nervous rescue, recovering from surgery or in their final chapter, that peaceful presence can help them rest. It can help you both remember that all is well.
If we could realize how much our energy really matters, I think we could show up as the best version of ourselves and know that that's going to help our animals heal.
