Learning to Let Go: Finding Peace When Life Feels Out of Control After Pet Loss

Dear Jack,
Try as I can to control it, I feel like my life is out of control since my girl died. What’s wrong with me?

Times like these are designed to teach you that you are not in control.
When Kate and I went for our walks, she directed my steps. On the leash I would move to the left, but a gentle tug to the right would put me on the course she wanted me to take.

“Come on,” she’d say cheerfully, “We're going this way, Jack.” I never looked back at where I’d thought we might go because I knew she knew where we were going and why. She was my friend and master. Pets know that man holds dominion over the animal kingdom and we accept that as our law, the way our heavenly Master planned it.

Then there was Joey. Little headstrong Joey would always try to take the lead. As soon as they’d reach an intersection, he would eagerly head one way — and Kate would head the other. Kate just wanted him to know that he didn’t know everything. She wanted to show him that he wasn’t the one in control of things. Much like our Master will show us when we begin to think that we can control everything. We can’t. We can’t control too many things in this life. He gives us the impression that we can by giving us Free Will, but ultimately the way we go is in our Master’s hands. Our Master ultimately holds the leash. The only thing we can really control is our response to what happens to us.

Love, Jack
