Finding Motivation After Loss: Understanding Grief’s Impact on Energy and Routine

Dear Jack,
I'm finding it hard to motivate myself to leave the house in the morning. I used to exercise a lot, but now I'm getting up and just laying around the place. My boy would've had me up early ...wanting to move and get out and enjoy life. What has happened to me?

Please understand that you're supposed to be taking it easy right now. IT TAKES A LOT OF ENERGY TO GRIEVE and it takes time to adjust to living life differently without the one you love beside you. You're using a different kind of energy right now. Don't worry you'll return back to doing it the old way, if you choose to. You'll regain your energy -- and then some --- when you have healed from this loss.

Just go easy on yourself. Don't expect to be super-motivated or to break any records. It takes a great deal of energy to cry and grieve and when you are depressed you cannot manufacture many of your own endorphins.

Don't forget the stages of grief. When the shock wears off, you'll feel more of the pain. That's where you are "at" now. It's tough but you'll get through it. You're doing all the right things and I appreciate you sharing what you're going through because you validate the experience and can model for others how to survive…and eventually thrive.

Love, Jack
