Facing the Past: A Letter on Grief and Healing

Dear Jack,
I can’t forget the terrible memories of what caused her death. Suffice it to say that in all that time I have refused to drive past her vet’s office. My neighbor picked up her ashes because I couldn’t bear going into that place again or seeing the people that caused her death! I still go miles out of my way to avoid seeing it. I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on that.

My dear she is waiting for you to face it so you can forgive! Kate, too, struggled with some vet issues that she avoided for many months. She would feel the haunting of the vet, like the Grim Reaper as it beckoned to her each time she drove by the clinic. Then one day she went to an adjacent office on purpose so that she would have to park in the same parking lot. So many thoughts and memories flooded her mind.
It is very hard to go back to places that represent the loss, but you MUST revisit when you have the courage to face it. It is this very action that will resolve things for you and for your departed pets. Please try to think about this, in little chunks if you need to. One step at a time. Once you stare it in the face it will begin to dissolve and it will soon have no more power over you.
Love, Jack
