For many of us, life can be an endless series of loves and losses. The stages of grief happen over and over again. Lessons of love repeat until we acknowledge what they came to teach us and then new lessons come in and repeat until we understand them. Every time you learn from a loss you are new again. You experience the end of a Way of Being and begin a new way of looking at yourself and the world around you. Some of us seem to live many lives within one lifetime. It’s By Design. You will become so much more if you allow each loss to transform you.
Some of the greatest creative works of all time were powered by loss. Some of the greatest loves of all time rose up from the ashes of loss. You think you’ll never heal, but once you work through the grief you will be inspired more than ever by your loss and by your love! Everything can be taken from a person but one thing: the ability to choose one’s attitude in any circumstance, to choose one’s own way.
Every time you find yourself in the same painful situation that you were in before, God is setting up another opportunity for you to learn something important. If you find yourself in the same circumstance over and over again, you apparently have not yet learned the lesson that comes from it. Grief keeps coming around. It’s all about learning. It’s all about love. It’s really all for you. You are being given another chance to show up differently in your own life.
As Jack says in his books, "Nothing is ever all good or all bad..." I look around me for something good that came from my incredible loss. I don't expect to see too much. Then I see a book. And another and another. I see a beautiful support group. I see friends I would not have known otherwise. I know things I never thought I’d learn. I see you. I see with new eyes and I think with my heart instead of my head...just the way Jack taught me to do.
If you are struggling with grief and loss issues and you see no improvement or hope for recovery, please seek out a bereavement or loss counselor to help you through it. Many community hospice organizations have a counselor or chaplain available who is willing to provide such a service to the community at no charge.
