Halloween, Oktoberfest, Día de los Muertos, Thanksgiving… between these holidays (and more), fall is a remarkably busy season! But with all of these festivities, there’s bound to be some exciting activities to do with your pets too. No matter what you celebrate, there are plenty of ways to incorporate your pets into your seasonal plans. I’ve compiled a handful of my personal favorites, but don’t be afraid to get creative and come up with your own ideas or alter one on this list to suit your specific occasion.
So, without further ado, here are five fun fall activities to do with your pets:
- Visit a pumpkin patch
This is a classic autumn activity that gives your pet some outside time in a new environment. It’s also a fantastic opportunity to bring the whole family along and spend time together. Pumpkin patches are popular fall photo locations as well, so don’t forget to take your camera!
- Pumpkin carving
Although it can be a little tricky, pumpkin carving is a perfect pastime for the season. If you’re an experienced artist, try to carve an image of your pet; or you can keep things simple with just an outline of their paw. With just a simple Google search, you can also find printable templates for guidance and inspiration (like these).
*BONUS!* Save your pumpkin scraps for a delicious pet treat! You can turn the “guts” into a yummy snack using a variety of methods. Keepthetailwagging.com has a wonderful list of recipe ideas to try out such as pumpkin puree or butter.
- Outdoor hike
Winter is just around the corner, so take advantage of this opportunity to get some fresh air with your furry friend before the temperatures drop. Autumn can be a particularly exciting time of year for pets because of all the different sights, sounds, and smells, too. Consider going on an adventure to a nearby hiking trail or park. You and your pet will get some exercise while also enjoying the season’s scenery together. Sounds like a win-win to me!
Even if your pet can’t leave the house (hi, cat owners!), you can still give them the season’s greetings. Put together a sensory box of objects (like leaves, sticks, rocks, etc.) from outdoors and bring them inside for your pet to check out. This is a useful alternative for pet parents who are looking to give them that same enrichment without actually venturing outdoors.
- Watch a festive Halloween pet flick
This one is for the cuddlers! Perfect for those blistery autumn evenings, pet movie night had to make it on this list. Just pop on your favorite pet movie and snuggle up under a blanket with your fur family. It doesn’t have to be Halloween themed. But for those of you who are looking for something spooky, here are my top four pet picks:
- Hocus Pocus (1993)
- Frankenweenie (2012)
- It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966)
- Scooby-Doo (2002)
- Costume contest
Who’s up for some friendly competition? A costume contest is a brilliant way to get in the seasonal spirit with your pets. You can find a local one near you, join one online, or host your own! Invite your friends and their pets over for an in-person showdown, or you can even get together on a virtual call to show off your pet’s look. If your pet has never worn anything before, this might not be the best idea since the designs can be complicated. But if your pet is okay with clothes, a costume contest is a fashionable fall activity that’s sure to entertain everyone!
And while we’re on the subject…
Don’t forget to enter our very own Halloween Costume Contest! We can’t wait to see all of your frightfully adorable pets in their costumes.
I hope this list has given you a few ideas to spark up the seasonal spirit with your pets! There are plenty of ways to give them a taste of autumn; some of which don’t even involve leaving the house. Suggestions like pumpkin carving and binging your favorite movies are perfect for cat owners or simple homebodies looking for a chill night in. For the socialites, I recommend visiting a pumpkin patch or joining a costume contest (which are often ran virtually now – like ours). Whatever you choose, just be sure that you and your pet both have fun and stay safe. Happy Fall-ing!
