5 Fun Fall Activities To Do With Your Pets

Halloween, Oktoberfest, Día de los Muertos, Thanksgiving… between these holidays (and more), fall is a remarkably busy season! But with all of these festivities, there’s bound to be some exciting activities to do with your pets too. No matter what you celebrate, there are plenty of ways to incorporate your pets into your seasonal plans. I’ve compiled a handful of my personal favorites, but don’t be afraid to get creative and come up with your own ideas or alter one on this list to suit your specific occasion.

So, without further ado, here are five fun fall activities to do with your pets:

  1. Visit a pumpkin patch

This is a classic autumn activity that gives your pet some outside time in a new environment. It’s also a fantastic opportunity to bring the whole family along and spend time together. Pumpkin patches are popular fall photo locations as well, so don’t forget to take your camera!

  1. Pumpkin carving

Although it can be a little tricky, pumpkin carving is a perfect pastime for the season. If you’re an experienced artist, try to carve an image of your pet; or you can keep things simple with just an outline of their paw. With just a simple Google search, you can also find printable templates for guidance and inspiration (like these).

*BONUS!* Save your pumpkin scraps for a delicious pet treat! You can turn the “guts” into a yummy snack using a variety of methods. Keepthetailwagging.com has a wonderful list of recipe ideas to try out such as pumpkin puree or butter.

  1. Outdoor hike

Winter is just around the corner, so take advantage of this opportunity to get some fresh air with your furry friend before the temperatures drop. Autumn can be a particularly exciting time of year for pets because of all the different sights, sounds, and smells, too. Consider going on an adventure to a nearby hiking trail or park. You and your pet will get some exercise while also enjoying the season’s scenery together. Sounds like a win-win to me!

Hiking with Dog

Even if your pet can’t leave the house (hi, cat owners!), you can still give them the season’s greetings. Put together a sensory box of objects (like leaves, sticks, rocks, etc.) from outdoors and bring them inside for your pet to check out. This is a useful alternative for pet parents who are looking to give them that same enrichment without actually venturing outdoors.

  1. Watch a festive Halloween pet flick

This one is for the cuddlers! Perfect for those blistery autumn evenings, pet movie night had to make it on this list. Just pop on your favorite pet movie and snuggle up under a blanket with your fur family. It doesn’t have to be Halloween themed. But for those of you who are looking for something spooky, here are my top four pet picks:

  • Hocus Pocus (1993)
  • Frankenweenie (2012)
  • It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966)
  • Scooby-Doo (2002)
  1. Costume contest

Who’s up for some friendly competition? A costume contest is a brilliant way to get in the seasonal spirit with your pets. You can find a local one near you, join one online, or host your own! Invite your friends and their pets over for an in-person showdown, or you can even get together on a virtual call to show off your pet’s look. If your pet has never worn anything before, this might not be the best idea since the designs can be complicated. But if your pet is okay with clothes, a costume contest is a fashionable fall activity that’s sure to entertain everyone!

And while we’re on the subject…

I hope this list has given you a few ideas to spark up the seasonal spirit with your pets! There are plenty of ways to give them a taste of autumn; some of which don’t even involve leaving the house. Suggestions like pumpkin carving and binging your favorite movies are perfect for cat owners or simple homebodies looking for a chill night in. For the socialites, I recommend visiting a pumpkin patch or joining a costume contest (which are often ran virtually now – like ours). Whatever you choose, just be sure that you and your pet both have fun and stay safe. Happy Fall-ing!

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is it safe to take my pet to a pumpkin patch?

A: Yes, most pumpkin patches are pet-friendly and can be a great outdoor adventure for your dog. Keep your pet on a leash, bring fresh water, and watch out for rough terrain. It's also a perfect opportunity for some memorable autumn photos with your furry friend.

Q: Can pets eat pumpkin, and how should I serve it to them?

A: Yes, plain pumpkin is safe and even healthy for most dogs and cats. It's high in fiber and can support digestive health. Serve it as plain cooked or pureed pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling, which contains added sugars and spices). Always introduce new foods gradually and consult your vet if unsure.

Q: What should I keep in mind when taking my pet on a fall hike?

A: Make sure your pet is up to date on vaccinations and parasite prevention before heading out. Bring enough water for both of you, keep your pet on a leash on trails, and watch for hazards like toxic plants, mushrooms, or wildlife. After the hike, check your pet for ticks, burrs, or cuts on their paws.

Q: How can I create an enriching fall experience for an indoor cat?

A: You can bring the outdoors inside by creating a sensory box filled with fall leaves, pinecones, sticks, and rocks for your cat to explore. You can also set up a window perch so they can watch the falling leaves and enjoy the sights and sounds of autumn from the comfort of home.

Q: Is it safe to dress my pet up in a Halloween costume?

A: Costumes can be fun, but pet safety comes first. Make sure the costume fits properly without restricting movement, breathing, or vision. Avoid costumes with small parts that could be chewed off and swallowed. Always monitor your pet while they're in costume and remove it if they show signs of stress or discomfort.

Q: What fall hazards should pet owners watch out for?

A: Fall brings several pet hazards, including Halloween candy (especially chocolate and xylitol), decorative corn and gourds if ingested, toxic mushrooms that sprout in autumn, antifreeze used as temperatures drop, and certain fall plants like chrysanthemums. Keep these items out of your pet's reach and contact your vet immediately if you suspect ingestion.
